Klezmer workshops

Zhok Hora viola player Lindsay Aitkenhead is an experienced teacher, performer and workshop leader, who has taught klezmer and run group sessions at every level from primary school to university. Zhok Hora‘s violinist Ray Kohn has been teaching klezmer to new and old hands for many years, and Sheffield clarinettist Jo Veal gives workshops, often at Folk Festivals. Together or separately we can provide accessible and enjoyable klezmer workshops covering instrumental music, dance and song, tailored to your group or school’s requirements. Please get in touch for further details.

January 2013 Llandudno: Lindsay Aitkenhead spent 3 days in and around Llandudno giving klezmer workshops in secondary schools, with Manchester based clarinettist Ros Hawley. The workshops were organised by the Llandudno Holocaust Memorial Day Committee and visited every kind of school: state, public, special needs and the local home education group. The workshops were a great success, and many unsuspecting children ended up singing in Yiddish, dancing round their classrooms as if they were at a wedding, and leaving the sessions with a smile on their face and a little bit of Jewish magic in their imagination. Students who were studying music for GCSE or A-level worked on re-creating the klezmer sound world, and composing or improvising their own music within it.
